The Corner 2017 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

  1.  Cleveland Browns – Myles Garrett – DE – Texas A&M
    •       Barring injury or some massive off the field issue in the next 2 1/2 weeks, this is a literal no brainer.
  2.  San Francisco 49ers – Solomon Thomas – DE - Stanford
    • The next best pass rusher in the draft, and a homegrown guy for the fans to latch onto.
  3.  Chicago Bears – Marshon Lattimore – CB – Ohio St
    • The Bears have a lot of needs with the secondary probably in the most need.  You could argue between this pick and Jamal Adams, but you can't pass on a potential shutdown corner.
  4.  Jacksonville Jaguars – Leonard Fournette – RB – LSU
    • The Coughlin regime 2.0 gets back to basics.  With many defensive free agent signings, and the injury issues of their current running back situation, the Fournette pick makes the Jags a significantly more dynamic offense....assuming Bortles rights the ship.
  5.  Tennessee Titans –  Jamal Adams – S – LSU
    • The Titans are my wildcard pick.  The draft could turn in so many directions with their choice.  Although the Titans have needs on offense to progress the maturation of Mariota, they have strong secondary needs and Adams is arguably the best defensive back in the draft.
  6.  New York Jets –  Derek Barnett – DE – Tennessee
    • The Jets are a mess.  A quarterback could easily be chosen here, but that would be a serious indictment based on previous seasons picks.  And we are not even talking about Geno Smith.  I see head coach Todd Bowles getting a comfort pick here.  A dynamic pass rusher whose stock is rising.
  7.  Los Angeles Chargers – Malik Hooker – S – Ohio St
    • Secondary help, Secondary help, Secondary help!!  Philip Rivers could use some protection from the offensive line, but it may also help him to not have to put up 28 points every game to get a victory.  The Chargers take the next best secondary player in the draft.
  8. Carolina Panthers – Dalvin Cook – RB - FSU
    • I see the Panthers going a number of directions here, but Cook is too enticing a player that can possibly take some pressure off of Cam.
  9.  Cincinnati Bengals – Ryan Ramczyk – OT – Wisconsin
    • Maybe the worst offseason of any team in the NFL, they need to solidify the offensive line after losing Whitworth.  This helps the run game, and protects Andy Dalton.
  10.  Buffalo Bills – Jonathan Allen – DT - Alabama
    • The Bills take the best available player in the draft to pair up with Marcel Dareus and others.
  11.  New Orleans Saints – Mike Williams – WR - Clemson
    • The trade of Brandin Cooks creates a need for New Orleans, particularly for future HOFer Drew Brees.  This could easily be a defensive pick and New Orleans may wait for a wide receiver with the 32nd pick in the draft.
  12.  Cleveland Browns – Deshaun Watson  – QB – Clemson
    • Cleveland is choosing between Watson and Trubisky.  I believe head coach Hue Jackson prefers Watson.  He is just a guy who wins and is extremely coachable.  Something an offensive/quarterback coach like Jackson loves.
  13.  Arizona Cardinals –  Reuben Foster – ILB - Alabama
    • It would be hard to pass up on the best defensive player in the draft at this point that fills a need.
  14.  Philadelphia Eagles – Teez Tabor – CB - Florida
    • Philly takes a flyer on a deep cornerback draft by drafting Tabor, who had it not been for some apparent hamstring issues during pre draft workouts, might have been a top 10 pick.
  15.  Indianapolis Colts – Takkarist McKinley – DE - UCLA
    • The defensive end from UCLA is rocketing up draft boards, and although the Colts primary focus should be on protecting Andrew Luck, the offensive line depth in this draft is much to be desired.
  16.  Baltimore Ravens – Haason Reddick – OLB - Temple
    • The Ravens need youth at this pass rushing position.  I could easily see a WR taken with this pick such as John Ross to replace the retired Steve Smith Sr, but Reddick has the skill set out of a small college similar to Demarcus Ware and Noah Spence.
  17.  Washington Redskins – Marlon Humphrey – CB - Alabama
    • Another team with a glaring need in the secondary, the Redskins filled offseason losses in free agency to some extent, but Humphrey gives them something that is much needed going against receivers like OBJ, Alshon Jeffrey, and Dez six times a year
  18.  Tennessee Titans – Corey Davis – WR – Western Michigan
    • Defense was the first choice.  Now it is time to give Mariota that dynamic player they have been lacking on the outside.  Tight End OJ Howard could go here as well, but Corey Davis is quite possibly the best receiver in the draft.
  19.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers – OJ Howard – TE - Alabama
    • This fits need and style for a young and upcoming Tampa Bay team.  It gives Jameis Winston another reason to celebrate.
  20.  Denver Broncos – Christian McCaffrey – RB - Stanford
    • How else do I put this?  A Stanford kid with penchant for playmaking ability goes to a team where his dad caught passes for years from another Stanford alum who happens to be running the team.
  21.  Detroit Lions – Taco Charlton – DE – Michigan
    • The offense has fire power.  The defense needs to stop the likes of Aaron Rodgers.  The more pass rush, the better.
  22. Miami Dolphins – Forrest Lamp – OG – Western Kentucky
    • Adam Gase and ownership need to do everything they can to protect their investment.  After spending heavily to bolster the defense last year and seeming to have some offensive firepower in the form of skill positions, its best to get some offensive line help.  Forrest Lamp, in my opinion, was the most impressive offensive lineman during pre draft workouts.
  23.  New York Giants – Garett Bolles – OT - Utah
    • The left tackle position last year was a disaster.  Flowers is much more suited on the right side of the line.  The Giants continue to try to build from the inside to protect their aging quarterback.
  24.  Oakland Raiders – Zach Cunningham – LB - Vanderbilt
    • The Raiders had a great year minus the fact that their season ended once Derek Carr's season ended due to injury.  Zach Cunningham has elevated on draft boards and the Raiders have a need for a smart and effective leader in the middle.
  25.  Houston Texans – Mitch Trubisky – QB – North Carolina
    • The most glaring need of any team during the offseason was even brighter once Tony Romo retired, leaving the Texans to pick up the pieces.  I find it hard to believe that a playoff team rolls with Tom Savage to start the season.  Whether it is Trubisky or Watson or even Mahomes, the Texans definitely take a signal caller here.
  26.  Seattle Seahawks – Kevin King – CB – Washington
    • With the impending possibility that Richard Sherman is traded, the Seahawks are trying to get younger at this position.  King is a local product that fits the mold of this defense.  He is long, very similar to Sherman.
  27.  Kansas City Chiefs – Malik McDowell – DT – Michigan St
    • There are many possibilities with this pick, including linebacker, but I think the Chiefs fill the void left by Dontari Poe and take the best available inside lineman.
  28.  Dallas Cowboys – TJ Watt – DE/OLB - Wisconsin
    • Similarly to the previous pick, the Cowboys can go a number of directions here.  Jabril Peppers could be a wildcard pick here, but the truth is, the Cowboys have taken flyers on players the last couple of years.  Watt is the pass rusher they need, with a motor like Sean Lee.
  29.  Green Bay Packers – Gareon Conley – CB – Ohio St
    • Remember pick number seven?  The same thing applies here, probably more so.  Conley is moving up boards as a heady player who can fit in many schemes.  As safe a pick in this draft outside of number 1 overall.
  30.  Pittsburgh Steelers – Jabril Peppers – S – Michigan
    • Not prototypical, but Peppers could prove to be the spark this team has missed since a healthy Troy Polamalu as a part of this defense.  Peppers is a jack of all trades player with a love a football to match.
  31. Atlanta Falcons – Charles Harris – DE – Missouri
    • After playing in a Superbowl, it is hard to find any weaknesses on a team.  The Falcons take advantage of a defensive line heavy draft and take the best player available on the board at that position.
  32. New Orleans Saints – David Njoku – TE - Miami
    • If you can't be productive with Andrew Luck and Drew Brees as your quarterback, it is time to end the experiment.  Colby Fleener gets competition and a player that is likely to push him out of a job.
